Healthy Hair Is the New Luxury: Inside Dubai’s Condition-First Beauty Shift

Hair trends move quickly, but the smartest beauty shift in Dubai is less about chasing the next viral look and more about protecting what makes any style work: healthy hair.
Ruby Barreau, Paris-trained colorist and stylist at At March14 Beauty Residence’s Hair Studio, shares an observation about how clients’ approach to appointments has changed. “A few years ago, clients arrived with a photograph. Now they arrive with a question about their own hair.”
“Today, a very large share of the women who come to the residence are coming to fix something: hair that is falling, hair that is breaking, ends that snap when they brush,” Barreau says. “They are no longer asking for a transformation; they are asking for their hair back.”
For Barreau, the change is not simply about repairing visible damage. It reflects a growing interest among clients in understanding their hair and making more informed decisions before undergoing a service.
Instead of focusing only on the final shade, cut or blowout, clients are asking how coloring, heat styling and chemical treatments may affect their hair over time. Some are willing to lighten their hair gradually across several appointments or remain a shade darker to avoid compromising its condition.
“Around 80% of homes here in Dubai run on desalinated seawater, which has calcium added back to stabilize it, plus chlorine to disinfect it. Every wash leaves a little more mineral on the fibre,” she explains. “Women who moved here from Europe noticed their hair behaving differently and were told it was the sun, or stress, or age. It was the water. Once you explain that, the client stops looking for a miracle bottle and starts asking for a plan.”
At March14 Beauty Residence, this means assessing the scalp and hair fiber before recommending a color or treatment. The Studio uses the Kérastase professional range, including the Première pre-shampoo, formulated with 8% citric acid and glycine, to address calcium buildup weakened fibres. Barreau says preparing porous hair before colouring can also support a more even result and longer-lasting tone.
For styling, heat protection is essential, and no client leaves with damp hair. Barreau notes that healthier hair holds color longer and reflects light better. “The real test of a service is not how it looks on the way out,” she explains. “It is how it looks in week six.”
At home, Barreau recommends keeping routines focused: shampoo selected for the scalp, conditioner or a mask for the lengths, a suitable treatment, leave-in care and heat protection. She also advises against combining aggressive chemical services or layering several repair products without first understanding what the hair needs.
“Buy less, buy better,” Barreau emphasizes. “Four correct products used properly will outperform eleven trending ones, and your hair will tell you the truth within six weeks.”
