Etihad Rail to Open Madinat Zayed and Liwa Passenger Stations on November 30 Move aims to boost connectivity across Al Dhafra ahead of the region’s busy winter events and festival season

Residents and visitors travelling to Al Dhafra will soon have easier access by rail, as Etihad Rail has confirmed that its Madinat Zayed and Liwa passenger stations will officially open on November 30, 2026, following directives from His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Al Dhafra Region.
The announcement came during a meeting at Al Nakheel Palace in Abu Dhabi, where Sheikh Hamdan received an Etihad Rail delegation led by Shadi Malak, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Rail. The meeting reviewed the latest developments of the UAE National Railway Network, including future passenger stations in Al Dhafra and ongoing strategic projects in Al Sila’a.
Originally scheduled for a later launch, the opening of the two stations has been brought forward to coincide with the start of Al Dhafra’s annual events and festival season. The earlier opening is expected to provide visitors with a convenient and sustainable transport option to reach the region’s cultural attractions, heritage festivals, desert destinations, and tourism experiences.
During the meeting, Sheikh Hamdan praised the continued support of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for national infrastructure projects that strengthen the UAE’s integrated transport system. He also commended Etihad Rail’s achievements in developing the country’s passenger railway network and recognised the role of Emirati talent in operating the service.
The announcement follows another major milestone for the national railway project. Passenger rail services between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah commenced on 30 June, marking the beginning of passenger operations on the UAE National Railway Network. Sheikh Hamdan also highlighted the recent inauguration of the Mohammed Bin Zayed City Passenger Railway Station in Abu Dhabi by His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, describing it as a significant step in advancing the country’s transport infrastructure.
Once operational, the Madinat Zayed and Liwa stations will further extend the passenger rail network into the Al Dhafra Region, improving accessibility for residents, supporting domestic tourism, and strengthening connections between communities across the UAE. The expansion forms part of Etihad Rail’s long-term vision to create a modern, efficient, and sustainable national transport network that links cities and regions throughout the country.
The meeting was also attended by His Excellency Nasser Mohammed Al Mansouri, Undersecretary of the Ruler’s Representative Court in Al Dhafra Region.
